""""""""""""""""""""""""
Here it is, the first edition of Who's Who_Atari! In this
T/TalkNET bookette you will find information on user groups, software
and hardware developers, online sysops, magazine publisher editors/
publishers - in short, anyone who is connected somehow with Atari.
Keep in mind that this is a growing project. Right now, thirty or
so people have participated in the Who's Who_ATARI! project. As more
people sign on, this bookette will be updated and released on GEnie in
the GEnie Lamp library, #35.
If you would like to be represented in future releases of Who's
Who_Atari!, just log onto GEnie, enter the ST RoundTable bulletin board
area and post your information in the GEnie Lamp Online Magazine area
(CATegory 34, TOPic 5). Anthony Dipietro [A.DIPIETRO] has started a
Who's Who topic (CAT 14, TOP15) specifically for Atari Corp. employees
which is also included in this bookette.
Take care!

Who's Who At Atari
""""""""""""""""""
o John Townsend o Dan McNamee
o Cary J. Gee o Ken Badertscher

JOHN TOWNSEND My name is John Townsend. I have been with Atari Corp.
""""""""""""" for 4 years today! Let me tell you, it has been one
very interesting four years.
I am currently employed as a Software Engineer in the TOS Systems
Group. I have worked on things like Stacy Battery Life Tests, STBook
Keyboard Testing, XControl (Prefix, and a few other things), an ill-
fated Video Game Development System, and other stuff that I can't talk
about! :-)
In the past, I have worked in Customer Relations/Technical Support.
I also worked closely with the Developer Support Group over the years. I
have been in the TOS Systems Group for close to 2 years.
I bought my first Atari Product in 1981 with the purchase of the
Atari VCS (or Atari 2600). I built up a library of over 60 carts and
then moved on to an Atari 400 in 1983.
I owned various Atari computers during the time from 1982 on (Let's
see.. 400, 800, 1200XL, 2 800XL, etc).) and then eventually sold all of
my 8-bit stuff and moved up to a 520ST with a color monitor, single
sided drive in 1985.
From that point on.. Atari has taken care of my hungry hardware
needs ;-) Current System: TT030 with 8 Megs of RAM, SyQuest, Laser
Printer, CDROM player at work.. TT030 with 6 Megs of RAM, SyQuest,
Laser at home. I think I am covered for a few months! <grin>
As for why I work there.. well, I when writing my first pieces of
BASIC code back in 1981-1982 in High School and picking up my Atari 400,
I often thought of how neat it would be to work for Atari. My friends
(when I lived in Germany) often spoke of "meeting" up at Atari after we
all got programmer jobs there (sort of a joke). But, for me.. I guess
I didn't get the joke. Because I am here, and they are all in Med
School! :-) Well, maybe we will join up someday to provide useful,
profitable, low-cost computer solutions to the medical market! <grin>
Anyway, I have been involved in User Groups since day one. My
first user group was the Mainz/Wiesbaden User's Group in Mainz,
Germany (Home of the MultiGEM and PAMs Net software! BTW.. This is an
American Group.. not a German Group. It was mostly US Military \
people...) and I also have been member of SNACC (Southern Nevada Atari
Computer Club), DUST (ST Group in Las Vegas), SLCC (San Leandro
Computer Club), and COAST (California's Original Atari ST Group).
So, like Dan.. I have had a checkered past! ;-)
-- John
PS. BTW.. I learned after I got here that the romantic ideas of
working with Atari computers change quickly. It's still loads of fun
and it's better than any job I have had, but it is much different than
you might imagine it would be. Atari is a business and when you work
for the company, it opens your eyes to things that you can't see as a
user. What is really weird is when I hear about super secret things
that as a user, I would LOVE to hear about, they don't seem like such a
big deal. Also, when I think back to when I saw the ST unveiled to
masses in 1985 in Las Vegas, I never thought that 6 years later, I
would have an office down the Hall from Sam Tramiel! Pretty strange
world, eh?
It's a real enjoyable and VERY educational experience. I am really
glad I am able to "live the dream."

DAN MCNAMEE My name is Dan McNamee and I have been working at Atari
""""""""""" for 3 years 6 months and 2 days. I started out in the
Technical Support department (working with John Townsend) and a little
over a year and a half ago started working full time on Atari
Softsource.
I have been an Atari user since the beginning. We started out
with one of the origonal Pong machines, graduated to a 2600 soon after
they came out (can you believe those things once cost over $200!) and
got a 400 in December of 1979. I've been moving up the scale ever
since. Ever since I got my 400 I have wanted to work for the company,
and I finally made it. Wishes can come true if you work at them hard
enough. ;-) -Dan

CARY J. GEE For those of you who don't already know me, my name is
""""""""""" Cary J. Gee and I have been with Atari for 5-1/2 yers.
Gosh! Has it really been that long?
My job title is Software Design Engineer. In layman's terms, I'm
a programmer. But don't let that fool you, I'm really an OK kinda guy.
I like to snow ski, play tennis and softball, do aerobics, bike,
scuba dive and lately, play the fine sport of Paintball.(splat).
In between all that, I manage to find some time to do a little
programming. :-)
Maybe you've heard of some of my projects. There's, uh, no, that
never made it out. Then there's, uh, no, that one didn't exactly
receive rave reviews. Oh yes, there's the, nope, I can't tell you
about that one, but if I did, then I would have to hunt you down and
kill you. hehe. But yes, at this moment, there IS something that
quite a few of you have on your machines and if you like it, please
send a small, ok, large donation in small, unmarked bills to moi.
Graci!
Sincerely yours,
The Lime Green Jello Club
GEmail address [CGEE]
>>>>> Well, since Cary is so modest.. I will spill the beans. Cary is
""""" the programming muscle behind the new Control Panel. He is the
guy that turned specification into reality and made it happen.
Of course, then there's that other program..
we won't mention that one. [TOWNS]
KEN BADERTSCHER Does anyone not know who I am? I've been with Atari
""""""""""""""" for (geez, I can't even remember how long, it's all a
blur) since TOS 1.4 was a glimmer in Roy Good's eyes. Neil Harris was
the guy who got me in the door, after watching my performance in
Darlah's hotel room one Comdex where a bunch of us were gathered for a
GEnie RTC. I took over the keyboard and started answering questions
for Neil & Darlah. I guess he was impressed by my typing speed :)
Before I worked for Atari, I learned how to be a software engine
from an incredibly talented compiler writer in Phoenix, AZ: Gary
Frederick of Jefferson Software. Before that, I worked as a contract
electrician at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, and before
*that* I spent a little over 5 years riding around in a nuc sub for
Uncle Sam.
I became a programmer because I never really found electrician-ing
intellectually challenging. I certainly don't have that problem with
this vocation! Lately I've been trying to wrap my brain around OOP -
Object Oriented Programming and design -- a challenge I heartily
recommend to any burned-out C programmers. I guess that's what I love
about this job so much; there's always another challenge on the
horizon.
Away from work I'm a hardcore telecommunications junkie, and even
more so a movie junkie. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't have
four or five cable channels worth of movies available. I also love to
travel, but don't get to do nearly enough of that.
I'm divorced; my kids Paul (7) and Beth (4) live with their mom and
stepdad and younger brother and sister in Tucson. I miss 'em lots.
Speaking of family, my mom Bunny Badertscher is the Chief of Staff for
the governor of Arizona. I'm incredibly proud of her for that!
Townsend's complaining that HE feels old... well, I just turned 30
last week. Now I can't even trust myself...
Most importantly, I consider myself a cat person more than a dog
person :)

MIKE FULTON My name is Mike Fulton. I've been with Atari Computer
""""""""""" Corp (Atari U.S.) since December 1 of last year. Prior
to that I was a programmer for Neocept Inc., and prior to that I worked
for an Atari dealership, Cal Com, in Buena Park, California.
I also served a term as president of the Atari Computer Association
of Orange County (ACAOC), and about 2-2/3 terms as newsletter editor. I
also played at being sysop & disk librarian here and there.
I got my first Atari machine, the 2600, about three months after it
first came out in 1975 or 1976 (I forget the exact year), and got my
first computer, the Atari 400, in Sept. 1981. The ST followed in July
1985, and the TT030 in Oct. 1990.
My position at Atari is that of Developer Support. I track down
answers to questions from developers, process hardware loans, produce
the developer newsletter, and so forth.

Products: Double Click Software currently offers four
software packages:
*** DC Utilities 2.0 is a set of nine versatile programs which include:
DC Xtract Plus - the _only_ product on any computer platform which
allows for archive manipulation of ARC, LZH, ZIP and ZOO files
(both ADD and EXTRACT) using a unique point-and-click interface
exclusive to DC Xtract Plus.
DC Squish 1.4 - the executable file compressor that is guaranteed
to be 100% compatible with all executable files (ACC, PRG, TOS).
DC Squish compresses executables, but leaves them 100% runnable.
DC Deskey 3.0 - Assign key equivalents to drop down menu items,
provide keyboard translations for any program (so you can tell the
program what keys _you_ want to use for its functions), perform
commands based upon keys typed or time elapsed, and program startup
commands.
DC RAMit - a program/desk accessory RAMdisk that is one of the two
fastest RAMdisks providing full-featured RAMdisk manipulation and a
companion reset-proof RAMdisk.
DC SEA - the _only_ self extracting archive creator that is used
by _all_ US magazines for their supplement disks. Creates or
restores ARC, LZH, ZIP and ZOO self extracting archives.
DC Freeze Frame - dump screens to picture files.
DC Desk Organizer - makes your DESKTOP.INF file a program.
DC Xtract 1.0 - the original, super-fast ARC extraction accessory.
*** DC Desktop is the only modularly designed desktop that additionally
is the only one that enhances the existing GEM desktop, rather than
replacing it. DC Desktop includes many modules and features, including
program icons on the desktop which can be run by a keystroke or by
double clicking, folders on the desktop, unique icons for all files,
folders and drives, recoverable trashcan, background picture for the
desktop, full-featured icon editor, terminal program, command line
interpreter, extensive graphical disk information (which displays drive
fragmentation), desktop menu entries via keystrokes, and more.
Atari ST and STE only.
*** DC Shower is an advanced file viewing system for the Atari ST/TT
computers. Also based upon a modular design (so you only use and occupy
memory for the features _you_ want), DC Shower offers the ability to
view text, picture (17 formats supported), binary (any file), digitized
sound (play back - uses STe hardware if available), and extract ARC,
LZH, ZIP and ZOO files. DC Shower can be used to completely replace
the built-in GEM desktop SHOW file command, can be called up from any
GEM program, can be used _directly_ from UIS 3.3 and can be installed
as the ALTERNATE TEXT FILE VIEWER in NeoDesk 3.0. Absolutely no other
file viewing system offers the versatility of DC Shower.
*** DC Data Diet is the _ONLY_ program for the Atari computer systems
that offers realtime data compression on **ALL** files. Use all files
exactly like you are used to, and enjoy a savings of disk space by
doubling (or tripling) your data storage capacity. Transparent
operation and 100% compatibility.
*** Double Click Software also offers DC Port: the only serial port
expansion cartridge for the ST which gives your Atari ST 2 or 4 extra
serial ports. DC Port is supported by MichTron BBS 3.0, STalker, and
soon GIME BBS.
Coming Soon:

authoring system. The system includes an extensive game routines
library, an animation sprite editor, a playfield/map editor, an image
